Israelis have come together throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Future management of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Protester a participant explained: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis want the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported two more dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, health workers reported.

Gaza's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
